The 72 Spirits

The Lemegeton organizes the 72 spirits of the Ars Goetia into a hierarchy of noble titles — kings, dukes, princes, marquises, earls and presidents — each described with an appearance, attributed powers, and, in some manuscript traditions, a superior spirit they answer to.

Frequently asked questions

Is the order of the 72 spirits always the same across editions?
The 1-through-72 numbering followed here is from the Mathers/Crowley edition (1904), the most widely cited. Earlier manuscripts, such as Dr. Rudd's (around 1650), preserve related lists but with variations — including the pairing of a corresponding angel with each spirit, a practice absent from Mathers' edition.
