Historical fact
In ancient Babylonian astronomy (recorded in the MUL.APIN compendium), the sky sector now known as Sagittarius was called PA.BIL.SAG, a hybrid divine figure — part man, part animal, often depicted winged — associated with a warrior deity linked to Nergal. Unlike other signs where the Greek image entirely replaced a distinct Babylonian figure, PA.BIL.SAG was already a hybrid archer, making it one of the more direct visual ancestors of the later Greek centaur-archer image rather than a purely Hellenistic invention. The specific identification in Greek myth is debated among classicists: some sources link the figure to the centaur Chiron, noted — unlike most centaurs — for wisdom rather than savagery; others to Crotus, a satyr who lived among the Muses and was credited with inventing archery and hunting on horseback.
