House 1 (Ascendant)
House 1 is the first of the 12 astrological houses and one of the four angular houses. Its start marks the Ascendant — the zodiac degree rising on the eastern horizon at the exact moment of birth — and it governs identity, physical body, temperament, and the first impression someone makes.

The Ascendant is the birth-chart factor most sensitive to birth time: because the Earth completes a rotation every 24 hours, the zodiac degree on the horizon changes completely roughly every two hours, cycling through all 12 signs in a single day — unlike the sun sign, which changes only once a month. The 12-house system itself is documented in Hellenistic astrology by authors such as Vettius Valens (Anthology, c. 175 CE) and Dorotheus of Sidon (1st century CE), who already treated House 1 as one of the chart's four most significant angles, alongside Houses 4, 7 and 10.
Interpretation — Western Astrology (Tropical)
In modern Western astrology, most astrologers use quadrant systems (such as Placidus, developed in the 17th century by the Italian monk Placidus de Titis) to calculate House 1's exact boundaries, which produces houses of unequal size depending on birth latitude. House 1 is read as conscious identity, physical appearance, temperament and the 'social mask' someone presents to the world — distinct from the sun sign, which reflects a more inner identity. Interpretation — Vedic Astrology (Sidereal)
Vedic astrology (Jyotish) typically uses the Whole Sign system: House 1 corresponds exactly to the entire sidereal sign the Ascendant falls in, with no unequal subdivision by latitude. This house is called the Lagna and is considered the foundation of the entire chart — even more central than the moon sign in certain predictive techniques — representing physical body, vitality and the person's overall character.
