The division of each sign into three 10° decans is inherited from an Egyptian system far older than the 12-sign zodiac: the decans, 36 small star groupings that rose successively on the horizon every ten days and served as a nighttime clock, recorded on coffin lids and astronomical tables from around 2100 BCE. This Egyptian system only merged with the Babylonian-Greek 12-sign zodiac in the Hellenistic period, when each decan came to be assigned a planetary ruler.
