Long before the 12-sign zodiac existed, astronomer-priests of Ancient Egypt already divided the night sky into 36 decan-stars, whose successive rising roughly every ten days served as clock and calendar — a system recorded on tomb ceilings and astronomical tables from around 2100 BCE. Only in the Hellenistic period was this Egyptian star calendar merged with the Babylonian-Greek 12-sign zodiac, giving rise to each sign's division into three 10° decans, each with its own planetary ruler.
