Long before the 12-sign zodiac was consolidated, Ancient Egypt already used 36 small constellations — the decans — as a nighttime star clock: each rose on the horizon at intervals of roughly ten days, in a system recorded on coffin lids and astronomical tables from around 2100 BCE.
