Decans date back to Ancient Egypt, centuries before the 12-sign zodiac was systematized: Egyptian astronomers mapped 36 small star groups whose successive rising, at intervals of roughly ten days, marked the nighttime hours — a system documented on coffin lids and astronomical tables from approximately 2100 BCE. The incorporation of these decans into the Babylonian-Greek 12-sign zodiac only occurred in the Hellenistic period, when each sign gained three 10° subdivisions with their own planetary rulers. In this second decan of Aquarius, Triplicity and the Chaldean system coincide again — as already happened at Aries' second decan — both pointing to Mercury as ruler.
